Ceiling Fan Guide

Lucci Air offers an extensive range of ceiling fans from decorative styles to slimline designs that blend effortlessly into any interior. But with so much to choose from, it can be difficult to know which is the right fan for your space. We’ve put together a handy guide to help you out.

What should you consider when choosing the perfect fan?

There are five things to keep in mind when selecting a ceiling fan for any space.

1. The location

All Lucci Air fans display symbols which indicate where in the home they can be safely installed making it easy to choose the fan that meets your needs.

Indoor only: Suitable for indoor use only.

Alfresco or indoor: Suitable for indoor and outdoor areas provided the fan is completely under cover with a minimum of two walls. Fan must be positioned in a location protected from water, wind dust and salt.

Coastal: Suitable for indoor, outdoor and coastal areas provided the fan is fully under cover.

2. Your room size

The larger the room, the longer the blades should be. Refer to this handy table to match the size of your room to the fan you need.

The next thing to consider is placement. Your fan should hang at least 300mm (11.8 inches) from the ceiling with at least 2.1m (82 inches) clearance from the floor. If your ceiling is higher than 3m (118 inches), you’ll need an extension rod which is optional with all Lucci Air fans. You can cut this extension rod down easily to suit the required height. For ceilings lower than 3m (118 inches), go with a close-to-ceiling option.

3. Fan technology: AC or DC

Alternating current (AC)

  • AC fans are easier to manufacture so they come with a lower price tag than DC fans.
  • All AC fans come with a summer and winter mode like DC fans and offer a variety of speed options.
  • All AC fans can be controlled via a wall panel while some are remote compatible.
  • AC fans are energy-efficient, costing just under 3 cents an hour to run*.

 Direct current (DC)

  • DC fans use up to 40% less energy than AC fans which means more savings on your power bills. In fact, DC fans cost about 1 cent an hour to run! *
  • DC fans offer more speed options than AC fans.
  • The new technology in their motor enables DC fans to operate silently so they’re perfect for quiet areas of your home.
  • As the motor is compact, DC fans feature slimmer designs than AC fans.
  • All DC fans can be controlled with a remote, however, they don’t come with a wall control option.
  • DC fans are more expensive than AC fans but over time the energy savings translate into higher savings on your power bills.

Whether you choose an AC or DC fan, you will be making the right choice!

4. With or without light

Fans with built-in lights are perfect for providing general illumination. They are great space savers too if your room is too small to fit both a pendant and a fan. These built-in lights are LEDs, so they run on less energy and last long. Many of these lights are also dimmable, which is perfect for turning down the brightness at the end of the day when you want to relax and unwind.

If you already have sufficient sources of general lighting or if built-in lights are not your style, opt for a fan without a light.

5. Fan blade

Timber and ABS plastic blades produce less noise than metal blade fans which make them perfect for quiet rooms such as bedrooms or studies. Due to the shape of the blades, metal blades tend to move more air making them ideal for larger spaces such as open plan living areas. If you live near the coast or are looking for an alfresco fan, go with ABS plastic blades as they can withstand harsh climates and they’re also easier to clean.

There is little difference between fans with 3, 4 or 5 blades in terms of performance, so choose based on your own personal choice.
